HISTORY
Hurricane Allen was a Cape Verde style hurricane, an oddity for early August. On July 30th, what would become Allen moved off of the African coast. On August 1st it was declared Tropical Depression 1. Early on August 2nd it became Tropical Storm Allen. Allen moved westward at an unusual speed of 15 to 20 knots, and became major hurricane on the 3rd as it passed south of St. Lucia. It rapidly straightened to a cat. 5 hurricane on the 5th as it passed south of Puerto Rico, and remained as such for an unusually long day.
At this time it attained a pressure of 911 mbar, the lowest pressure in the East Caribbean. The eye moved just north of Jamaica and south of Hispaniola as a cat. 4. Later, Allen became a cat.5 again, reaming that strength again for a day. It moved between Cuba and the Yucatán Peninsula. Over the Yucatán Channel it reached its peak intensity, an amazing 899 mbar. One of the most amazing facts is that it never made landfall, even though it passed near the Caribbean islands.
Allen weakened to a cat.4 again, but than re-strengthened to a cat. 5, over warm water, and again stayed that strong for a day again. It attended the lowest pressure ever in the west Gulf of Mexico. Shortly before landfall it weakened to a cat.3.
IMPACTS
